Professor Karl Gaffney has been a Consultant Rheumatologist at Spire Norwich Hospital and The Norfolk & Norwich University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust (NNUH) since 1996. He is also honorary professor at Norwich Medical School University of East Anglia, Founder member, trustee and chair of the British Society for Spondyloarthritis (www.britspa.co.uk), chair of the British Society for Rheumatology axSpA guidelines group, an invited member of the Assessment of Spondyloarthritis International Society, co-lead clinician for the National Axial Spondyloarthritis Society (NASS) Gold Standard Delay to Diagnosis campaign www.actonaxialspa.com, Director Rheumatology Events (www.rheumatologyevents.org) and axSpA lead for the National Early Inflammatory Arthritis Project Working Group.
Former roles include trustee and chair, NASS medical advisory board, associate editor Rheumatology, invited expert the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE), Rheumatology Service Director NNNUH, Director of Postgraduate Education NNUH and Director of Rheumatology Training, Eastern Deanery. His research interests include epidemiology, dose optimisation and extra-musculoskeletal manifestations of axial spondyloarthritis. He oversees a large clinical trials programme, has published over 200 original papers and is an invited speaker at national and international meetings.
Professor Gaffney qualified in 1988 from University College Dublin (Honours). He trained in general medicine and rheumatology at The London Hospital. He is the author of over 100 papers in peer reviewed journals. His research interests include ankylosing spondylitis, rheumatoid arthritis and osteoporosis.
